How to Trek Everest Base Camp Safely?

Prepare yourself mentally for the trek

You need to build strong mental endurance for trekking to EBC. You will be walking through remote mountains of the Khumbu region where you won’t have comfortable paths and stay like your home. You won’t be able to enjoy the lavishness and luxuries of the world on the trail. Hence, you need to be prepared for the environment of the mountains and living in the mountains.

With a strong mental endurance, you will be able to enjoy the incredible views of stunning Himalayan vistas and exotic landscapes of the Khumbu region.

Train yourself physically for the trek

Everest Base Camp is a moderate trek in the high altitudes. You can successfully complete the trek with proper physical fitness. You will be walking for long hours for 14 days in the mountains. Most of the walks will be an uphill climb with some downhill hike. Hence, it is advised to walk for at least 1 hour for a month before going for the actual trek.

Also, you should do regular exercise to increase your muscle strength for walking in the difficult passes of the mountains. It is recommended to go for a small hike before going for the trek to prepare yourself. If there is no hill nearby to the place you stay, you can practice by speed walking on the stairs of your house carrying a backpack on your back.

You can perform following exercises to train yourself for the EBC trek:

  • Start to train yourself about 4-5 weeks before the actual trek.
  • Perform Cardio exercises like walking, running, cycling, or swimming.
  • Carry a backpack with moderate weight inside the backpack while doing cardio exercise
  • Do squats, push-ups, pull-ups, and deadlifts to strengthen your muscles.
  • Do not over-exercise. The aim of training is to increase your lung capacity and stamina.

Take Slow and Steady Steps

Everest Base Camp Trek is an enjoyable and wonderful walk among the beautiful nature. You should not hurry by speed walking to complete the trek sooner. You should take slow and steady steps to enjoy every aspect of this trek.

Also, the slow and steady steps will help you reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness. You must not hurry to complete the trek and enjoy stunning mountains and landscape views. Hence, it is very important to rest for a while and walk slowly enjoying the amazing scenery of the Everest region.

Keep yourself Hydrated

One of the most important tip for the entire trek is to keep yourself hydrated. It is very essential to drink enough water on the trekking trail, and it also helps to reduce the chances of getting altitude sickness.

Carry a water bottle and take a sip of water from the bottle time and again even if you do not feel thirsty. Your body gets dehydrated faster at a higher elevation than at the sea level. Hence, drinking water should hydrate you, and it should be a top priority. Acute Mountain Sickness is quite common at higher altitude and keeping yourself hydrated is one of the best ways to keep you safe from it.

Keep an eye on symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness

It is very important to keep yourself safe from Acute Mountain Sickness at heights. You must be careful about the symptoms of acute mountain sickness and the changes your body shows. If your body starts showing the symptoms of AMS, you need to get remedies for it.

You need to take small and bit by bit steps once you observe AMS symptoms in your body. Also, you need to take proper and adequate acclimatization. You must also give your body enough time to adjust to the increased elevation and mountain environment. You can take up the prescribed medicines to prevent AMS in the severe condition.

Protect yourself from UV rays

The sunrays at higher elevation are more harmful because of the UV exposure. In order to keep you safe from harmful UV rays, it is advised to cover yourself. You can use a good sunscreen and wear a sun hat to safeguard you from sunburn. They help reduce the risk of sunburn and pesky wrinkles.

Final Words

The important thing to remember while trekking to Everest Base Camp is that you are here to enjoy and you will be able to witness numerous of wonderful and amazing things on the trail. Hence, you need to keep yourself relaxed and calm to enjoy every aspect of the nature.
